5 Star Celebration!
Our Lady of the Nativity achieves 5 stars!
What an inspiring journey Our Lady of the Nativity primary school has had over the past 6 years. They began the ResourceSmart Schools program with us in 2019. By 2022 they completed their Core, Waste and Energy modules, Biodiversity in 2023, and Water in 2024. Then in October, they were awarded the prestigious 5 star certification.
The school follows in the footsteps of St Francis, inspiring others to act and reduce their ecological footprint. The Franciscan Student Action Team along with their Principal, Anne Doherty, their Sustainability Coordinator, Alison Lappin, and the rest of the school, celebrated their achievement at the 5 Star ceremony. They were presented their award from Minister for Education, The Hon. Ben Carroll MP, and representatives from Sustainability Victoria and Environment Education Victoria.
Student leaders from previous years (now in high school) also attended the event to celebrate and see how their efforts during primary school have created lasting outcomes.
To date, the school has:
Saved $23,476 on bills.
Reduced carbon emissions by 21 tonnes of CO2, equal to taking 14 petrol powered cars off the road every year.
Reduced power use by 20,326 kilowatts, equal to powering 4 houses every year.
Reduced waste by 188 cubic metres, equal to 6 shipping containers of rubbish removed from landfill.
They don't intend to stop there. Sustainability mindsets and practices have become deeply embedded at the school and their goal is to grow their positive impact and results every year.
Congratulations again to all the students and staff of Our Lady of the Nativity on their outstanding commitment to the environment and all living things!
